Screencasting on Ubuntu - Part 1 of 3

Screencasting on Ubuntu Part 1

In the first of three screencasts we look at some preparation steps to setup an environment for creating quality screencasts on Ubuntu. In the second part we'll look at scripting and recording a screencast and part three will cover video editing and publishing.

A screencast about screencasting?

The recursiveness hurts my brain.

Problems with the files

Hello Alan!

First, I appreciate your screencasts, the new and the older one from 2007. They helped me to switch to Ubuntu.

But now the bad news: I have problems with the new ones. I want to download them to watch them off-line. I want to use the OGG-Files. The first one (Live-Installer) runs properly in Totem, no problems. The next three (Repositories, DualBoot and Partitioning) didn't start in Totem and vlc, so I downloaded the MP4's. They run properly. I thought, bad for OGG, but I can do nothing. Today I wanted to dowload the first screencast about screencasting under Ubuntu. None of the downloadable files runs under Totem or vlc, not even that one that runs in the browser (Firefox 3.5) (it runs properly in Firefox, but after downloading it with the DownloadHelper-plugin, I couldn't start it with Totem or vlc).

Because I received no error message (double click on file, Totem/vlc comes up, vanishing of the mediaplayer) I started both mediaplayer on the command line. The same happend, but now with error message:

BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
Details: serial 112 error_code 11 request_code 132 minor_code 19

(apart from serial all codes the same for Totem and vlc; it says, it has something to do with XVideo)

Now my question: Where is the fault - do I have the wrong codecs or so?
Like I said, I like your screencasts and they helped me, but I'm a little bit annoyed that I can't play your screencast off-line. Please helpe me.

Wish you all the best

Andreas

Thanks

Thanks for the great screencast tutorial! Nice to see how this is best done on Ubuntu (using only free software I suppose).

Looking forward to see the other parts soon.

Addendum to Problems with the files

Hi Alan!

Just now I downloaded the OGV-File on my WindowsXP-Machine via Opera. It runs properly under vlc on tis machine (but it shows over 2h for length). I copied it to an USB-stick and tried it under Ubuntu - same problems as in my former comment - same error message under Totem.

Like I said - a little bit annoying.

Best wishes!

Andreas

Excellent, now for parts 2 & 3

Thanks a lot Alan. That was very informative. Now I desperately want to see parts 2 and 3. Do you have an approximate idea when they will be ready?

Thanks a lotT!!!!!

Great!!!!

Are you telling us something about zooming in parts 2 and 3? Please, please, please... :)
